FAQ

Australophyllia Wilsoni are large polyp stony (LSP) corals in the Lobphylliidae family.  They are sometimes called “brain” or "Lobed brain” coral.  They are highly prized for their beautiful mixes of colors.

Wilsoni need lower lighting in the range of 100 par.  They also like lower water flow.

Wilsoni are a bit unique in that there is a warm water variety that will work well in a typical saltwater reef tank (77 degrees) and a cold water variety that likes more like 72 degrees.  Although you may see Wilsoni in some wonderful colors, the brighter colored Wilsoni tend to come from colder waters.  Some hobbyists have had success slowly increasing the water temperatures, but the success rate is unclear.  If your Wilsoni has wild colors, it’s probably from colder waters and you need to plan for that.

Wilsoni get most of their food from the zooxanthellae, but really benefit from weekly targeted feeding with Mysis or brine shrimp when you see their tentacles.

Wilsoni are aggressive at night with their sweeper tentacles. So, best to give them a few inches so they don’t harm your other corals.

Water Quality:  PH 8.0 – 8.4, Nitrate 5 – 30 (best to keep it stable), Phosphate 0.05 – 0.2, Alkalinity 8 – 9 dKh, and Calcium 400 – 450.
