Understanding SPS Corals
Small Polyp Stony corals are the master architects of coral reefs, responsible for creating the massive calcium carbonate structures that form the backbone of reef ecosystems. These hard corals belong to the order Scleractinia and are characterized by their tiny polyps, rapid growth rates, and complex branching or plating growth forms.
SPS corals are found primarily in shallow, high-energy reef environments where intense sunlight and strong water movement create optimal conditions for their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae. The Indo-Pacific region, particularly around Australia's Great Barrier Reef and the coral-rich waters of Indonesia and the Philippines, hosts the greatest diversity of SPS species.
These corals are the primary reef builders, secreting calcium carbonate skeletons that create the three-dimensional structures supporting countless marine species. Their rapid growth and stunning forms make them highly prized in the reef aquarium hobby, though they require advanced care and pristine water conditions.
Advanced SPS Coral Care Requirements
SPS corals demand the highest level of aquarium maintenance and represent the ultimate test of reef keeping expertise. Water quality must be exceptional, with stable parameters including calcium (420-450 ppm), alkalinity (8-12 dKH), and magnesium (1250-1350 ppm). Intense lighting is absolutely critical, as SPS corals require high PAR values (300-800+ μmol) to support their dense populations of symbiotic algae. LED systems with full spectrum capabilities are preferred, providing the intense blue and white light these corals crave.
Strong, chaotic water flow is essential for SPS success, delivering nutrients, removing waste products, and preventing detritus accumulation. Flow rates of 20-40 times tank volume per hour are typical, with multiple powerheads creating varied current patterns.
Nutrient levels must be maintained at near-natural reef levels, with nitrates below 5 ppm and phosphates under 0.03 ppm. Regular water changes, carbon dosing, and protein skimming help maintain these pristine conditions. Many SPS keepers also supplement with amino acids and trace elements to promote optimal coloration and growth.
Popular SPS Species Reefkeepers Choose
Acropora
The undisputed kings of SPS corals, Acropora species showcase incredible diversity in growth forms, from tabletop plates to intricate staghorn branches. These fast-growing corals display stunning color combinations and are prized for their vibrant blues, greens, purples, and pinks. Acropora require the highest light intensities and pristine water quality.
Montipora
Versatile and beautiful, Montipora corals offer various growth forms including encrusting plates, branching structures, and unique cap formations. Known for their smooth skeletal texture and brilliant fluorescent colors, Montiporas are slightly more forgiving than Acropora while still requiring advanced care.
Stylophora
Stylophora coral species feature distinctive club-shaped branch tips and excellent coloration. These hardy SPS corals are known for their rapid growth and ability to adapt to various lighting conditions, making them excellent choices for intermediate to advanced keepers.
Pocillopora
Recognized by their compact, cauliflower-like growth pattern, Pocillopora corals are relatively hardy SPS specimens that tolerate minor parameter fluctuations better than other SPS species. Their dense branching creates excellent fish habitat and stunning visual impact.
Seriatopora
The elegant "Bird's Nest" corals feature delicate, thin branches with distinctive pointed tips. Seriatopora species are known for their pastel colors and graceful growth forms, creating beautiful contrast in SPS-dominated reef displays.
Staghorn Corals
True to their name, these corals develop impressive antler-like branch structures that create dramatic focal points in reef tanks. Staghorn corals require excellent water flow around their complex branches and reward proper care with rapid, impressive growth.
