About the Blastomussa Coral
Blastomussa encompasses a genus of large polyp stony corals containing roughly six species, frequently called "Blastos" or “Pineapple Coral”. These corals originate from the Mussidae family and naturally inhabit Indo-Pacific waters, especially around Australia. The aquarium hobby primarily features two species: Blastomussa wellsi and Blastomussa merletti.
These corals feature characteristic circular, inflated polyps that mirror mushroom anemones when extended, frequently showcasing brilliant hues spanning blue, green, red, purple, and mixed colorations. Blastomussa specimens develop in dome configurations, with separate corallites expanding outward from a shared foundation, ultimately forming colonies exceeding one foot in diameter. These are deliberate growers, requiring approximately twelve months to produce 2-4 additional polyps under optimal circumstances.
Blastomussa Coral Care
To guarantee optimal outcomes for your Blastomussa coral, please follow our recommendations outlined below. Regular water testing is crucial to maintain parameters within appropriate ranges.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 75-80°F (24-27°C)
- Salinity: 1.023 - 1.025
- dKH: 8-12
- pH: 8.1-8.4
- Nitrate: 2-5ppm
- Phosphate: 0.02-0.05ppm
- Calcium: 380-450ppm
Lighting:
- Output: Low to moderate illumination (75-125 PAR)
- Position: Lower to mid-tank regions. Avoid harsh direct lighting.
Water Movement:
Moderate non-direct water movement works best. Too strong of currents can inhibit proper polyp expansion and feeding behavior, while mild circulation helps eliminate debris accumulation. Situate them distant from turbulent zones where powerful currents could create coral stress.
Positioning, Behavior, & Fish Compatibility:
Lower to middle tank sections are optimal, positioned on rockwork or substrate with solid surfaces for secure attachment. Blastomussa corals demonstrate peaceful behavior, making them perfect for establishing Blasto collections when combined with other Blastomussa varieties and many other types of coral species.
Exclude large, hostile fish like the Butterflyfish or large crabs, as these can harm or devour coral tissue. Suitable fish include Gobies, Clownfish, or non-aggressive Dwarf Angelfish.
Nutrition:
Blastomussa corals should be fed with small zooplankton or liquid coral food. They can also survive on the nutrients available in your aquarium. Avoid overfeeding your corals to maintain water quality. During feeding sessions, ensure each coral receives nutrition to promote healthy coral growth.
