Collection: Montipora

Montipora are small polyp stony (SPS) corals from the Acroporidae family, which include over 85 species of coral that display extraordinary diversity in growth forms from plating and encrusting varieties to intricate branching and scrolling structures. These corals are regarded as more beginner-friendly than other SPS species, requiring stable tank conditions while being more forgiving of parameter fluctuations than other more challenging coral species. These beautiful corals are ideal for aquarium hobbyists ready to explore SPS coral keeping or experienced reef keepers seeking diverse growth patterns and vibrant colors.

About the Montipora Coral

Montipora is the second most species-rich coral genus after Acropora, with over 85 known species that represent some of the most important reef-building organisms in tropical marine ecosystems. These corals exhibit remarkable diversity in growth forms, including submassive, laminar, foliaceous, encrusting, branching, and plating varieties. It is not uncommon for a single Montipora colony to display multiple growth morphologies simultaneously.

As primary reef builders, Montipora corals create complex three-dimensional habitat structures supporting incredible biodiversity in their natural environments. They have distinctive skeletal architecture with the smallest corallites of any coral family, featuring porous coenosteum and corallite walls that can result in elaborate structures. The absence of columellae and the unique coenosteum structure of each species makes them useful for identification.

Found throughout the Indo-Pacific region including the Red Sea, western Indian Ocean, and southern Pacific Ocean, Montipora species are entirely absent from the Atlantic Ocean. Montipora corals are known for their vibrant fluorescent colors, often displaying small polyps that contrast dramatically with the surrounding coral tissue. Healthy specimens can exhibit colors including orange, brown, pink, green, blue, purple, yellow, grey, or tan, with some species like M. spumosa and M. verrucosa displaying mottled appearances.

Caring for Montipora Coral

To ensure the best results for your Montipora coral, please follow our suggestions on coral care below. It's important to test your tank's water often to ensure the parameters are within the correct range.

Water Parameters for the Montipora Coral

  • Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)
  • Salinity: 1.024-1.026
  • pH: 8.1-8.4
  • Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH
  • Calcium: 420-450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1300-1350 ppm
  • Nitrate: 5-15 ppm
  • Phosphate: 0.03-0.06 ppm

Notes on Lighting

For lighting, you should start with moderate levels and gradually increase to high intensity Placement of this coral species should be in the middle to upper areas of the tank.

Lighting requirements for Montipora fall within 125-300 PAR, though gradual acclimation is essential when increasing intensity. Start with lower light levels around 125-150 PAR and slowly increase over several weeks until the coral demonstrates healthy growth and vibrant coloration.

Montipora are photosynthetic and among the most light-demanding corals in the hobby, though they are more forgiving than Acropora regarding lighting changes. When fully established, most species thrive under 200-300 PAR conditions.

Proper Water Flow

Water movement should be moderate to high but indirect, providing adequate circulation without damaging delicate polyps. Montipora benefit from strong water movement that helps prevent debris from settling on their surfaces and ensures proper nutrient delivery.

However, direct or excessive flow can cause tissue damage or prevent polyp extension. Use powerheads or wave makers to create varied flow patterns throughout the tank.

Placement, Temperament, & Notes on Fish

Middle to upper areas of the tank are ideal for most Montipora species. While Montipora exhibit peaceful temperaments toward other corals, they are fast growers that require adequate space for expansion. Most Montipora species can touch each other without aggression and will often stop growing in the direction where they meet other Montipora colonies.

Certain fish species such as butterflyfish are known corallivores that will nip at Montipora polyps. Ensure you choose reef-safe fish species that won't damage your corals. Montipora corals are also known to host various endo- and ectoparasites, so regular observation and quarantine procedures are recommended.

Feeding Your Montipora Corals

Montipora corals derive their primary nutrition from symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within their tissues through photosynthesis. While they do not require target feeding like LPS corals, they can benefit from broadcast feeding with fine particulate foods, amino acids, and small zooplankton.

Fish presence in the system also provides beneficial nutrients through natural waste production. If Montipora appear drab despite good water chemistry and lighting, they may benefit from supplemental feeding with amino acid solutions or fine coral foods.
