Porites is a small polyp stony (SPS) coral that had been assigned to the family Poritidae. They are mostly an encrusting coral and can grow into mounds. When the polyps are extended, they appear fuzzy. They are a moderate difficulty coral, similar to Acropora, but are on the easier end of the SPS corals. They can grow fast and large under good conditions.
Porites coral like more intense light in the range of 200 - 250 par (but can go up to 350 par).
Porites coral get most of their food from their symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic zooxanthellae, but they will additionally capture food from the water column.
Water flow should be moderate to high for Porites coral as it keeps the corals free of detritus and brings them food. Their polyps are not too sensitive to flow, but don’t go overboard. Generally, Porites like the same environments as Acropora.
Porites corals are generally peaceful corals, but still give them a bit of room as they can grow fast and encroach on other coral.
Water Quality: PH 8.0 – 8.4, Nitrate 5 – 10 (best to keep it stable), Phosphate 0.05 – 0.1, Alkalinity 8 – 9 dKh, and Calcium 400 – 450.
