THIS PRODUCT:

ADA GREEN BRIGHTY NEUTRAL K is a liquid fertilizer for supplying potassium to a planted aquarium. 

When potassium is insufficient, the photosynthesis activity and growth of aquatic plants are affected and this can cause yellowing and bleaching of leaves as well as lower resistance to algae.  Daily application of GREEN BRIGHTY NEUTRAL K to the aquarium eliminates these problems. 

This product does not cause a rise in pH and carbonate hardness (KH).  It is ideal for supplying potassium to aquatic plants that do not prefer high pH and KH environments.

 

THE ADA BRIGHTY DOSING SYSTEM:

This product is part of ADA’s new “Brighty” line of freshwater plant supplements.  The bottle resembles upscale personal care products and will look good on your shelf if left out.

 

The Brighty line includes:  Green Brighty Neutral K, Brighty K, Green Brighty Nitrogen, Green Brighty Mineral, Green Brighty Iron

 

As opposed to an “all purpose” fertilizer, the ADA approach breaks out components and lets you add the right material to your tank without over dosing others that may lead to other problems, such as algae.  As the demands of your developing tank change, the mix of ADA products changes with it.

 

The ADA dosing approach tends to make water with less fertilizer in the water column.  The approach provides higher potassium and iron, but smaller amounts of NO3/PO4.  More reliance is placed on having a rich substrate to drive plant growth.  The thinking is that too much fertilizer in the water can lead to additional challenges, such as algae.  One significant alternative approach (the “EL”) approach relies on much high dosing levels. 

 

The trade-off between the ADA (more lean approach) and high dose approach (the EL approach, for example), is that the lean approach (with richer substrate) means less time and effort playing with dosing/water parameters and, likely, less algae (i.e., green dust and green spot).  Nitrogen limited tanks give deeper reds in some plants (i.e., Rotala Rotundifolia, Ludwigia Arcuata, Limnophila Aromatics). Plant growth may make it easier to maintain aquascaping.

 

However, when the substrates depletes of nutrients, you may need to add supplements (such as root tabs).  Non-rooted plants (i.e., Anubias) may not grow as quickly.  The higher dosing approach may help with more difficult plants that demand high water column fertilizer.  Most water column plants will grow faster with higher water column fertilizer levels. 

 

However, the ADA dosing approach is very flexible and you can adapt your approach to increased desired fertilizer levels.  For example, if you have more water column demanding plants, you can use more Green Brighty Nitrogen without adding more of the other material. 

 

As a generalization, the ADA approach really shines in many common tank setups.  For example:  tanks that are hardscape heavy and you want it to look clean with little to no algae,  tanks with plants that like nitrate limitation or are slower growing or easier to keep, tanks with red plants that get redder with nitrate limitation, Iwagumi tanks, tanks without CO2 with easier to keep plants, and, where you want to restrain the growth to keep the look you want with less trimming and maintenance.
